AP/Dual Credit Spanish 5

Course Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this course, our goal will be to acquire Spanish language. “Acquiring” a language is very different than “learning” a language. Acquiring is something that happens to you instead of something that you make happen. When you learned how to speak your first language, you acquired it naturally by listening to other people speak it around you for a long time; not by studying it. Therefore, all of our class time will be spent exclusively in Spanish--not using English to talk about Spanish--and although we will be writing a speaking a lot, the focus will be on listening and reading. This Spanish course is a Comprehensible Input Spanish course, and we will use methods and strategies that are based on Dr. Stephen Krashen’s Input Hypothesis.

COURSE CONTENT

Real-Life Target Language Use

Throughout the course students will have various opportunities to use Spanish outside of class. Students are required to engage in these real-life activities outside the classroom to enrich their Spanish language and culture experiences.  Each six weeks, students will earn points through a Culture Choice Board.  Every Culture Choice Board contains multiple options for culture and language use.  Options include but are not limited to:  attending an art exhibit, musical show or play: preparing a   meal while following recipes written in Spanish: regular correspondence with a Spanish speaker through email, Skype or Face Time; attending hispanic cultural events in our community; hosting a student from a Spanish-speaking country; visiting area businesses and learning about opportunities with Spanish; teaching/assisting in area ESL classes; viewing of Spanish language films; etc.  Although all students are required to do this, completion of these Culture Choice Boards will also be  considered as the lab credit for those students participating in Dual Credit.
